Lesson 2: Form a Collaboration

If your students are having trouble coming up with a song... you can start one for them and have them finish it. In this way, the theme is already started and they don't have to come up with a melody too. Be sure to pick a tune that they are familiar with. In the following example, we are studying basic chemistry. I started the song and asked students to finish it by adding an additional verse. It was given as extra credit. Some students merely reworded what was already said but I've included one that did add new information.

(sung to the tune: "Knee bone's connected to the...")

Electrons are attracted to... protons.
Neutrons are neutral no.... charge on.
Neutrons, protons in the nucleus.... sit.
And electrons get to orbit.

Chorus:
That's the story of, that's the glory of the atomic theory.
The tiny atom, the mighty atom, it's all about energy.

Protons are positive ... all of the time.
Electrons are negative... its no crime.
Periodic table keeps the elements classed.
Protons and neutrons make up the mass.

Chorus

Atomic number is... how many protons.
Chemical reactiion due... to the electrons.
An atom with a charge is... an ion.
Stealing electrons: ionic bonds.

Chorus

( new verse by B. Murray)
pH scale gives us the ... right taste,
If a solution is an acid.... or a base.
Sometimes it's neither.... at all
It's just really neutral.
